FLON History

Dr. Diana E. Clemons is no stranger to the Kansas City metropolitan community when it comes to organizing, planning and implementing a variety of programs in the Greater Kansas City area.

Perceived as an essential non-profit in this area, FLON has long been committed to promoting post-secondary preparation and the behavioral health and social and emotional well being of vulnerable young people through a strengths-based, positive youth development (PYD) approach that has yielded statistically significant outcomes.

The program initially called I CAN W.A.I.T. (Why Abstinence Is my Testimony), now promoted as The Pursue Your Dreams (PYD) Initiative, has impacted thousands of people.

To date approximately 319,478 people have attended the “Life Changing Leadership and Abstinence assemblies, small group workshops, parent education workshop and community rallies which all leads up to the Annual Pursue Your Dreams Summit, now in its 13th year.

Of the 319,478, approximately 302,478 were pre-teens and teens, while 17,000 were parents, young adults and other adults who gained knowledge from the various programs.

The success of FLON's interdisciplinary approach in planning, coordinating and implementing evidence-based programs with adolescents and families is implemented through our own unique Five-tiered Community Saturation model that includes: 1) School-Based; 2) Community-Based; 3) Faith-Based; 4) Parents, Caregivers and other Stakeholders and 5) Media Marketing Campaign.  The program model was published in the 2011 American Journal Health Studies (AJHS).

THE BEGINNING

From 1999 - 2003, FLON conducted the annual leadership Summit at Penn Valley and Pioneer Community College, Bartle Hall Convention Center and Sheffield Family Life Center.  During this time, to name a few, these national motivational speakers Les Brown, Andrea Mosby, Forest Hill, Joseph Jennings, Les Brown Jr. and others talked to the teens about leadership principles and setting boundaries from risky behaviors in order to stay focused on pursuing their dreams.

The I Can W.A.I.T. Project (2003-2006), now promoted as the Pursue Your Dreams (PYD) Initiative for the target population of boys and girls ages 10-19 are taught character based abstinence curriculum education and post-secondary preparation.

Approximately 50 schools in Kansas City, KS, Kansas City, MO and Grandview, MO schools participated in either classroom abstinence education and or school assemblies. Additionally, programs were implemented in approximately 11 community and faith based organizations.

Dr. Clemons and Njeri Shomari, MSW has developed a reputation for implementing unique and much needed programs that bring about hope and change for individuals that are always executed with humility, passion, enthusiasm and an unwavering standard of excellence.

Their tireless and endless efforts to bring the community together have been successful as a result of family, friends, collaborative partners, C.A.R.E. Willing Workers, who are project volunteers and Community Sponsoring Partners. C.A.R.E. is an acronym for Committed, Accountable, Responsible and Engaged.
